Born and raised in Seattle's Central District, saxophonist and composer Gary "Jubil" Hammon spent decades in the Boston and New York jazz scenes before returning to Seattle to "give back to the community that raised him."

Gary will be sharing work-in-progress excerpts from a new show he is creating that blends live storytelling and original compositions. The new work is called In Case You Didn't Know and references his experience growing up in the 60s and 70s, as a Black musician, in the CD. It will premiere at Langston Hughes, as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival, on November 3rd.

This concert, and Gary's new works, are made possible by funding from 4Culture Heritage Projects and Artist Projects.

Join us for an intimate sneak peak of this exciting new work, on Sunday September 15th. Gary will be joined by musicians Erik Esvelt and Todd Gowers.
Gary Hammon started on saxophone at Garfield High School, and he later studied under Joe Brazil. He played with many Seattle-based bands, including Dave Lewis, the Black and White Affair, the Soul Regents, Chuck Metcalf, Robbie Hill, Booker T Williams, and Tiny Tony. Gary was in the first Black cohort admitted to the New England Conservatory of Music, in 1969. After that, he toured and played with the likes of Big Jim Patton, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Jaki Byard, Carl Atkins, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Guitar Shorty, Barbara Donald, and Grant Green.

ACCESSIBILITY. Wa Na Wari is sited in a 5th-generation, Black-owned home that was constructed in the 1910s. Making the space accessible is a priority, but until we have raised the necessary funds to do so, accessibility is limited. The first floor is up one flight of stairs (seven steps with a handrail), and the bathroom is on the second floor (20 steps with a handrail). We appreciate the community's patience as we work on space accessibility.

Please help Wa Na Wari be a good neighbor. Street parking is limited in the area. If you can, park a few blocks away and walk to Wa Na Wari, making sure you are not blocking neighbors' driveways.
