sanctuary print shop at Wa Na Wari
Saturday February 29, 11:30AM-1:30PM
The Sanctuary Print Shop bridges art and community: it is both a functioning print shop and an open space for engaging questions about immigrant rights. Visitors are invited to not simply take in the exhibition– comprised of prints, timelines and videos about sanctuary cities and immigration ordinances in the US– but to directly participate in silkscreen workshops and printmaking events, community conversations, and other public interventions. You can see their work online here but is best experienced in person! The Sanctuary City Project has run the print shop in San Diego, all over the San Francisco Bay Area, and even Alaska, but this is their fist time in Washington- from October 27, 2019 through February 21, 2020, the Sanctuary Print Shop: Seattle was in residence in Seattle University's Vachon Gallery.
For this special POC-led and -focused printmaking session at Wa Na Wari, Sanctuary Print Shop: Seattle curator, Thea Quiray Tagle, will lead an interactive printmaking session and conversation about placemaking and the power of print. No experience necessary- wear close-toed shoes and comfy clothes you wouldn't mind getting paint on (just in case!).
